A recent research study indicated that at least one third of women (aged 18 to 59) experienced an issue with low libido that was more serious than a simple lack of interest. There could be a variety of reasons contributing to this sexual disorder, ranging from physical or psychological but the symptoms of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSSD) can be effectively managed with the use of flibanserin (brand name, Addyi).
One of the most frequent conditions among women is low libido. While it is common for the sexual desire of women to fluctuate as they age, there are some instances where there is a drastic change in sexual arousal (such as none at all), which can be concerning
When sexual disorders or dysfunctions come to mind, many people relate these issues to the sexual health of men, but these conditions can be equally distressing for women as well. In fact, sexual dysfunctions, such as painful intercourse, little to no sex drive and difficulties reaching sexual climax are all common issues among the female population. Female sexual dysfunction does not have to be endured, especially for women who are pre-menopausal.
Addyi has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since August 2015 and can be used to increase the number of satisfying sexual activities experienced.
Addyi tablets are an efficacious female sexual dysfunction treatment used by women who have not yet gone through menopause. The Addyi medicine has, however, not been indicated for women who are post-menopausal.
The reasons for women experiencing HSDD (and who may require Addyi treatment) may vary, as there are extensive possible female sexual dysfunction causes. Some of these include:
Physical causes
Psychological causes
HSDD has been a recognised medical condition for over 39 years but it was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 2013 and replaced with a new diagnosis, known as female sexual interest/ arousal disorder, or FSIAD.
Addyi is used to treat women, who are specifically pre-menopausal, for the symptoms of HSDD or FSIAD.
Some of these female dysfunction symptoms include:
Much like other medical conditions, there is no definitive diagnosis for this sexual disorder but you can be prescribed Addyi tablets if you meet the above criteria, and if the symptoms of HSDD/ FSIAD have severe and undesirable consequences on your sexual health and well-being.
Addyi increases the sexual desire of a woman by affecting the key hormones in the brain but the effects of this medication can take up to four weeks before noticeable changes are observed. With that said, if there is no improvement after using Addyi sex pills for eight to twelve weeks, it is recommended that treatment be discontinued.
However, Addyi tablets for HSDD/ FSIAD have proven to be effective for many women. In a study (English et al., 2017) analysing the safety and efficacy of this medication, dosages of this therapeutic were administered to women that were pre-menopausal. And even though it may not be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Addyi doses were given to women who were post-menopausal as well.
The results of this study were positive, in terms of the number of satisfying sexual experiences (SSEs), over a 28 day period. It was reported that the women in the treatment group (those given Addyi) showed significantly more SSEs over the 28 day period than those in the placebo group. These findings were the same for both the pre- and post-menopausal women as well.
According to the previously mentioned study, the initial and generally advised dosage of Addyi should be 100 mg, prior to retiring to bed. These tablets may be administered with or without food, but should be taken with a drink of water.
Even though food may not be required for the functioning of these pills, administration of Addyi after a meal may increase the systemic absorption of the therapeutic.
These researchers went on to recommend that Addyi not be taken during the daytime as it increases the risk of hypotension (low blood pressure), syncope (fainting) and somnolence (excessive drowsiness or sleepiness).
Furthermore, evidence of this study indicated that if there are no visible improvements in the symptoms of HSDD/ FSIAD within eight weeks of using Addyi, then it is recommended that one stop the administration of these tablets.
It was also reported that the sedative effects of this therapeutic was dose-dependent. This means that higher dosages were associated with undesirable side effects, as compared to lower dose regimens. It is for this reason that the recommended dosages be adhered to so as to minimise the risk of unwanted adverse events.
The most notable side effects of Addyi, in the clinical trials conducted by the manufacturer, were fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth and nausea. But, there is limited evidence regarding the severity of these adverse events.
However, should you find that any of these side effects are a little more than mild in nature; you can use the following ways to manage the symptoms:
